Are You Overlooking the Important Things?
There were many years of my life that a work out wasn't "worth it" if it wasn't at least a 3 mile run or minimum 60 minutes in the gym. It seemed like it was a waste of time to get started and then "not do much." Call it age, maturity, reflection, experience or whatever you like, but now I have a completely different viewpoint.
I notice this within my clients as well - comments like
- "I should be farther than this"
- "I can't believe this is all I'm able to do"
- "Why am I not progressing faster?"
- "I don't have enough time"
But I think we are all overlooking the important things.
You see - the long term success you desire is built on the TINY, SMALL actions you take every day.
The health outcomes you are searching for will only be achieved brick by brick.
Your fitness goals can't be accomplished by pressing a fast forward button.
It Starts Small
I had a life coaching client once who was extremely busy, single mom, full time job and felt overwhelmed all the time. She would use the word "stressed" a lot and in coaching we were trying to break down what that really meant and how to work through it.
She didn't have time to work out, change her eating routine and no disposable income to hire anyone to support her.
So I suggested she start with sitting in her car for 1 minute before she walked into work and focusing on taking 5 deep breaths.
This could help her transition from mom mode to work mode, to give her body and mind time to transition and breathing is good for so many things.
She said NO.
She said no she didn't have time to take deep breaths and in fact, she stopped coaching shortly after that session.
I think about this client often because I'm pretty confident that if she had started with the smallest thing (3-5 deep breaths before work) it would have snowballed into more.
It would have created a foundation for her to build onto.
But she was overlooking the value of 1 minute of her time.
Where are you overlooking the good stuff?
I truly believe we all have time for anywhere from 1-10 minutes of something.
- Breathing
- Walking
- Stretching
- Meditating
- Cleaning
- Writing in a journal
- Sitting in the sunshine
But it takes intention, thought and appreciation for the value of a small action.
